Local, organic agriculture on heritage land in Cowichan Valley, BC
Affinity Farms
While the property has always been in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and was initially an asparagus farm many years ago, there was no agricultural activity on the site for over 50 years.
That changed four years ago. Affinity once more has farm status and approximately 3 acres are now being actively farmed with additional land to be added. At this time there is a productive and growing raspberry field that is being expanded with cuttings from the existing plants. There are also approximately 100 five year old blueberry plants that are just now starting to become productive.
An agreement with growers for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm has resulted in bumper crops of tomatoes, leeks, cabbages, pumpkins, squash, carrots, garlic and much more. With plentiful spring water and a complete irrigation system, sunshine and the lack of deer, the site is small but very productive.
A small greenhouse on the property adds to the production, as does a raised bed garden.
Future plans include the development of the Barn on the property to include a production kitchen to process produce, and to add a second and larger greenhouse.
Further down the road there are plans to develop a “fermentorium” to process the berries and vegetables grown on the farm and to develop the spring water on the property. |
