We had a fantastic paddle to Genoa Bay Cafe for dinner last night. The food is as good as ever at the cafe, we enjoyed the seasonal risotto, duck and the most amazing halibut dish! Yum yum! Here we are taking a "short cut" across the shallows of the estuary. What a fun trip!

Check out this great blog posting about AffinityGuesthouse and Cowichan Bay. Thank you Paige, for visiting Cowichan and staying at Affinity Guesthouse. Paige's visit was followed by this great note from Tourism Vancouver Island:

I just wanted to follow-up and say thank you again for hosting Paige last
week.  She said you were indeed the friendliest B & B ever, as your website
stated and she really enjoyed speaking with you.  She couldn't believe how
you sensed her arrival and jumped down from your work to assist her with any
bags... she was very impressed with your place. Thank you again, Karen Bonell 2010 & Beyond Media Coordinator Tourism Vancouver Island

I hope this review of Affinity Guesthouse is a good one! I don't speak German, but I assume from the exclamation marks and the few words I do understand that it is positive. Let me know, please!

Aha! Feb 5, 2010 Jaqueline sent me a translation:

5 stars for the house  5 stars for the hosts 5 stars for nature and peaceful quietness

We just loved this place and I’d like to stay there for at least a month! We spent some peaceful days there on our trip through western Canada, it was a very good decision! Dwight and Vanessa, our delightful young hosts organize kanu-trips on the river…very romantic. The house is large, beautiful architecture. You have it for yourself as a guest (two beautiful and big bed-rooms with en-suite baths, a big living-room with fireplace, a veranda and a huge piece of land and garden.) Dwight is famous for his breakfasts…e.g. blueberry-lemon-scones, or delicate crêpes with raspberries from the own orchard! So, whoever needs some days in pure nature, far away from cities, is well advised to stay at Affinity Guest House….(well, you can reach the village by bike and you’ll find one or two lovely taverns for food/fish and the shops you need!) Get out of stress and your usual daily life and enjoy Cowichan Bay! Jacqueline, Stuggart, Germany

OMG! The reviews online did not do Affinity justice. From the fire that Dwight made us last night to Vanessa's delightful conversation over a delicious "neighbourhood Breakfast" to the property walk afterwards (including wild apple picking) we had a truly wonderful experience. This is our first trip alone in 15 years (we had bunch of kids along the way) This stop during our week in Victoria/Vancouver Island will remain with us for a long, long while. Thanks Guys!!! Vanessa and I actually had the opportunity to get away this weekend! An usual circumstance left our Guesthouse empty for the weekend and we spontaneously decided to make a quick trip to the west coast and camp at Pachena Bay! We had a great time on the beach playing ultimate and paddling our canoe out in the waves to Keeha Bay and we spent some time at Bamfield Marine Science Center as well.

Affinity Guesthouse Cowichan, July 27, 2009

Well, well! The heat has been fantastic here lately! Vanessa and I are both very happy to live on the river, so we can jump in whenever we get near overheating while harvesting our raspberries. Yesterday, we took a day off and took the local transit to Lake Cowichan and cycled home on a combination of the Transcanada Trail and backroads, with stops at our favourite swimming holes: Skutz Falls, Stolz Pool and Sandy Pool along the Cowichan River. We ended with a burger and Mojito at Just Jakes Restaurant. What a treat!!!!

Affinity Guesthouse Cowichan, July 26, 2009

Thanks for looking after us so well. We love your house, your sumptuous breakfasts and your "flat white" and "long black" are getting there! We hope to see you again soon. Dave and Lesley, Auckland, NZ

For those of you that don't know, the coffee world "down under" has their own language. The familiar addages of the North American Barrista do not apply and it can be difficult to please a coffee-craving-Kiwi in the morning!

Many, Many thanks for putting us up a week earlier than booked! The thought of coming back here to Affinity kept me going the last 2 nights of our trip. "2 more sleeps to Affinity!" Your breakfast are awesome:yet another thing to look forward to for our next visit. Carmen and Dave, North Van, BC

Dave and Carmen started and finished a 6 day canoe sailing trip through the gulf islands here at Affinity. With stops on Darcy, Portland South Pender, they sailed their custom canoe all the way back to Affinity for their final night of holiday.

Vanessa and I managed to find the time to go and eat lunch with Darren at Steeples Bar and Grill in Shawnigan Lake. What a treat!

Vanessa and I had the pleasure of hosting Eric for 6 days while he competed in the South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Tournament. Eric is an outstanding personality, trained chef and likely one of the most interesting people you will ever meet if you are ever so lucky. He has an amazing compilation of on line recipes.

Our new claim to fame is having Olympic Athletes stay at Affinity Guesthouse! Part of the Speedskate Canada team cycled over from The Richmond Oval for some cross training on the only rainy day of summer!

Dwight and Vanessa: What an amazing place to live! Thank you so much for bringing a bunch of hurry speedskaters into your home. There were plenty of carbs for everyone! The garden is wonderful, but I don't think that anything could top the seal watching {From the Big Canoe} You probably never thought some local seals could excite a group that:) Hopefull we'll be able to come back for some SUNNY days. Thanks again, Britteny Schussler.

Thanks alot, it was more than I was hoping for. Despite the rain, it was a great break for the Speedskaters. So, thanks for helping them to prepare for 2010 olympics here in Vancouver. Ingrid Paul, Coach Canada

We found a new favourite paddling destination on hot summer nights!

Affinity Guesthouse May 27, 2009

I just don't know where to begin to put into words how much we enjoyed our time at Affinity.  Our wedding last year in May was absolutely perfect, Dwight & Vanessa, you went out of your way to accomodate us as your first big wedding event and help make our day a dream come true.  We were lucky enough to return again this year for 2 nights to celebrate our 1st anniversary and once again, you both have gone above and beyond.  The paddle was a highlight for sure - thank you so much for arranging that, the breakfasts were oh-so-delicious, the room - ahhh...the room, our morning spent on the estuary and beach was so rejuvenating, exactly what we needed.  Thank you, thank you.  I'm looking forward to coming back again to go for a hike with Vanessa sometime so she can narrate for us all that we see, and hopefully next time we can hang out for a campfire and sauna which we didn't have time for on this trip either.  Looking forward to building many more great memories at your hidden paradise!

Once again, our stay was fabulous. Thanks for everything, Keith and Mary, Vancouver, BC

Brentwood Regatta Time- What a winning mix: Daytime stretches of bluffs and meadows, night time reaches of stars with no light pollution; helpful hosts but great guest privacy; deep-sleep beds with breakfasts worth getting up for. (and , as I mentioned to you, Dwight: those breakfasts definitely pass my "restaurant test" of things I'd never have the patience or creativity to whip up at home...)

Thanks, from Lisbet & Mark (Seattle)

Affinity Guesthouse Cowichan Feb 20, 2009

We always enjoy having guests for more than just a few days. Vanessa and I both enjoy getting to know truly how to spoil a visitor; there is no better way than to have him or her here for more than a typical 3 day stay. Sue just left us after a two week stay and while she was here she was able to enjoy paddling with us as well as food at all our favourite destinations: Bistro 161, Hilary's cheese, The Rock Cod Cafe, True Grain Bakery and she made a quick trip to Tofino to visit Miche and Nova at Affinity Guesthouse Tofino.

Hey D&V: Thank you for sharing a little bit of heaven here at Affinity with me. Things I will Remember: chocolate in my room, soap wrapped like a present, delicious apple pie when I arrived and a toasty fire going, Dwight in his red toque with Vanessa's apron on the first morning I had breakfast here, delicous & interesting breakfasts, the trip to Tofino, Miche and Nova, the trip to Victoria (and the pushy sales lady!), interesting conversations with D&V. You are both very unique and interesting and are great with each other: admirable. Oh yes, and the early monring paddle that was truly invigorating and a great start to the day!!! I wish you both the best in all you endeavour to do. Sue, Toronto, ON

The weather has been great, and of course we have been attracting photographers to the property to enjoy the winter scenes. Cim Macdonald spent some time here this fall and sent me a few photos. This is the best shot of quail on our property, and I love how the Downy Woodpecker is going after the Larvae in the gall on this Nootka Rose.

Vanessa and I have been experimenting with growing grain here at Affinity Guesthouse and we had some success growing Quinoa and Amaranth last season; but now we have found something even better: we have become members of Island Grains. If you are interested in growing grain, food security or farming, be sure to check out that link. Here is a photo of Brock working it old school at Makaria Farms, and a photo of Vanessa and her Quinoa Crop from summer, 2008

We have been enjoying the sauna more and more lately. The Canadian Geese are leaving town: making room for the Trumpeter Swans that will be arriving soon. Other recent arrivals include Spring and Coho Salmon, with the seals and sea lions in hot pursuit. The Chum salmon will be just behind and then the eagles will be here for the real feeding time! How exciting!

I just returned from a 5 day canoe trip on the Sayward Lake Circuit near Cambell River on Vancouver Island. I was one of the guides for 9 teens from Victoria. Luckily, we were in tandem boats and not our big canoes. The Sayward circuit is a true test of endurance. I recommend it to anyone in search of a challenge. The individual lakes are all wonderful and the smaller portages can be sporting. But really, 2.2 kms with a canoe on your shoulders and a barrel strapped to your back?

What fun! Last night we had the pleasure of taking 12 people out in our Voyageur Canoes as a birthday surprise for a lucky Leo. I have to add that their special request was to keep our guard dog, Seth, in his kennel. I need to thank these wonderful guests for the kind offerings of treats and toys they bought on the way here for Seth. The gifts were accompanied by this note:

Dear Seth: please don't take it personally that we don't want to meet you. I'm sure you are a very sweet dog. Thanks for staying in your cage while are here. We promise we won't be long. Enjoy your treats! Thank you, Sharon and Ari

So far as we are concerned, this place has everything to commend it. Surrounded by a lovely wild garden, essential items such as dog and cats, birds which in the UK are seldom seen and water: both ponds and estuary. Sadly, our idyll wias curtailed by Ruth's indisposition and she was unable to join the canoe and food foray, nor could she see the great gathering of First Nation canoes when over a hundred vessels convened and formed a kaleidoscope of boats and their crews as they circled the arena and presented themselves to the chief of the day. Ruth's temporary incapacity was met by warmth and cheerfl care and so who knows when we will return to a place and people which have so utterly charmed us. With love, from Ruth and Harry, UK

Dear Dwight and Vanessa: You two have got it just right! I admire your ability to live your dream and follow your beliefs. Don't ever change that about yourselves. Thanks again-lovely place-swimming at high tide was excellent and the paddling and wildlife tour was not bad either! Helen/David, Hugh and Rose

And after, we found this note in our typewriter (you would have to see our typewriter to appreciate this guest book submission):

Dear Dwight and Vanessa:

We had a lovely time at your B&B thank you very much. (This typewriter is an absolute hoot)-it is almost like the one I learned on in Grade 9 (1969)except it did not have the letters on the keys, they were all blacked out. Hope you have a great canoe trip next week-we really enjoyed the paddle last night. Typing on this thing is harder on my arms than paddling. Thanks again, Helen

On Sunday, we had an incredible couple stop in to spend a night in our King Room. It is wonderful guests like this that make us so happy! Here is the best compliment we have received to date!

I just have to say that Keith and I have been B&B fans for 20 years but for the past few years the experience has worn a little thin – we’ve seen more and more burned out, grumpy, tired, fussy operators. Staying with you was SO REFRESHING, we felt truly welcome and comfortable, and honest to God, neither of has slept so well in recent memory.

Thanks so much for everything!

Affinity Guesthouse Cowichan July 2, 2008

Amn and Heather stopped in for a night on their way home from Telegraph Cove.

We couldn't have asked for more. The suite was beautiful and accompanied by a breakfast that still makes my mouth water. Thanks so much for the relaxation time! H &A, Vancouver, BC

And we agree: we couldn't ask for more either. We attract the greatest people to Affinity Guesthouse. Our guests are generous, wonderful people...just like you!

We were taking photos of our voyageur canoe today. Doesn't this boat look so fun?

The weather is hot, the river is cool and we had some great guests this weekend. George and Melanie came up from Seattle to compete in the South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club Summer Classic tournament.

Thank you so much for a wonderful time! We enjoyed the hospitality, beautiful setting and fantastic breakfast!

We also were lucky to be hosting travelers from the UK, and Topeka, Kansas! We were able to take a group up the Koksilah River for an evening paddle just as the sun set. What a wonderful way to end the day.

Dear Dwght and Vanessa: thank you for your warm hospitality, scrumptious food, joyful and welcoming spirit! It was such a great end to our busy days-coming back the beauty and calm of Affinity House. The evening canoe trip was the perfect ending to our stay. Warmest regards, Nadine, Wales, UK, Lua and Marcia, Topeka, Kansas.

Hey, I am back again. Here are some more great shots of the summer on the property at Affinity. Don't tell Dwight I have his password! Our garlic scapes are being tenderly added to everything culinary, as are strawberries. We don't eat the roses, but I made a bunch of rosewater from the Nootka rose which is abundant at Affinity Guesthouse.

This week was the inaugural 'Bike to Work Week' event in the Cowichan Valley. Vanessa and I both donated to the event (a voyageur paddle and one night at Affinity Guesthouse). The event was a total success. The part I liked best was the celebration stations (with chocolate buns from True Grain Bakery) and the wrap up celebration, which doubled as a bike-show-and-tell. Family, commuters and businesses were all in attendance showing how they overcome the obvious obstacles of a cycling lifestyle. For example how does a cycling auto mechanic get a 75 lb engine stand to his work place? or How does one transport up to 500 lbs of recycling collected from downtown businesses?

We hosted a surise paddle this morning in our voyageur canoe.  We paddled into the estuary in perfect conditions with 9 paddlers.  What a great way to start the day!

Dwight and Vanessa: ..this morning's outing was such a wonderful way to start the day.  After taking off 'my' boots, I sat for a few minutes to watch the swallows.  They're as blue as the water!

When we were done paddling, we cooked breakfast for our wonderful guests visiting from California.

Paul is an inspiration to us all: biking to work should seem easy after checking out Pauls Blog: He is biking across the USA is an effort to visit as many friends as possible!  Paul and I had a great time exchanging stories.  Of all the cycle tourist I have met, Paul seems the most like me: as he states in his own blog, some will get it, and some won't, and that is how long distance, self contained biking touring is.

This weekend, we hosted the Auctioneer Patrick O'Brien while he visited the Cowichan Valley.  Patrick was in town to attend the Sunrise Waldorf School fundraising Auction.  Not only did Patrick attend the auction...He WAS the auction.  He was instrumental on keeping us bidding, laughing, laughing and bidding all night long.  Gumboot Guiding donated a guided canoe tour for 8 to the auction.  Our friends at Merridale Cider hosted the event and the food (and beverage) was absolutely amaizing.

We have finally hidden the Affinity Guesthouse geocache on our waterfront.  Our offer of fresh baked cookies to the first five people to visit the cache had immediate results.  Our kayak/canoe only access to the cache makes it a little challenging to locate, but we like to think we are worth it.!  If you have not heard of Geocaching before: check out www.geocaching.com to learn more about this digital treasure hunt.

The monthly Green Drinks event was a success, as usual.  Monthly meetings of eco-minded locals at a local pub to network, promote and mostly unwind and enjoy a drink with friends.  The most intriguing website I learned about tonight is about the Vancouver Island Diet: a website dedicated to islanders inspired by the original 100 mile diet.  The Island Diet focuses on searching out local growers and producers and supporting them.  Anyone interested in food security issues, as we are here at the Affinity, will enjoy this website.

I arrived home with enough time to finish building 50 swallow boxes which we hope will attract nesting couples of swallows when they return from their stay in the south.

The Cowichan Valley Camera Club visited our property today as part of there weekly field trip series.  We hosted 19 club members for tea and baked goodies after they broadcast themselves over the entire property in search of unique and interesting photo opportunities.  If you are interested in Photography or wildlife in the Cowichan Valley, I would definitely check out their photo album at http://www.pbase.com/cvcc/potw_0808 The CVCC is a well organized and fun bunch of people!   Thank you Sharon and Carl for bringing the club to our property!

We had a regular flow of Sunday drivers visit the property today.  Vanessa and I try to be home on Sundays to welcome people to the property and show the house and acreage to anyone curious enough to venture down Samuel Rd to find us.  Today one of our drop-ins was a wonderful family touring the area, experimenting with their cameras.  Check out this blog for some great shots of the house; and some great narratives!  Thank you Vanessa and family!  http://creativecubbyhole.blogspot.com/

Dear Dwight & Vanessa, Thank-you for showing us the Affinity Guest House, it was beautiful. The walk with Seth around the dyke was really enjoyable. If anyone asks me where a good place to stay and enjoy nature, the first words off my lips will be Affinity Guest House.

Even more important is if anyone asks me "do I know any nice people" I will say "go and meet Dwight & Vanessa at Affinity Guest House"

Again thank-you and God bless.  David B

I visited Simon at Ocean EcoVentures today.  His year-round whale watching business is taking on a new look as he expands his store front to include an espresso bar and bakery!  The bakery will be open in Spring time; just in time for the return of our resident orcas.

I just finished a night time walk around the property under the clear skies and half moon.  The trees around the property are alive with a symphony of Barred Owls calling.  Hearing these beautiful night hunters calling in chorus is absolutely fascinating!

Most of the eagles have left the area, but they have been replaced by the return of the trumpeter swans, Red Tailed Hawks soaring above our property, the regrouping of Ravens talking in the trees and of course, the baritone call of the Barred Owls.  Here a few photos from last year at the property.  Sorry for the quality of the photos, I am not a bird photographer!

Guests Mary and Renauld stayed with us for the weekend while they searched the Cowichan Valley for a wedding venue for their wedding in August.  We hope they choose Affinity Guesthouse for their outdoor wedding!  They were our first bed and breakfast guests to enjoy our outdoor wood heated sauna!  How exciting.

Affinity Guesthouse Jan 2, 2007  Happy New Year!

Guests from the Cowichan Wooden Boat Society joined us for a scenic paddle to Genoa Bay today.  It was marvelous to be paddling in the bay on Jan 2.  Our goal was to see some wildlife, sip some hot chocolate at the marina and enjoy the conversation.  Mission accomplished!   We enjoyed a thrilling surf home with a following wind.

Our second annual Affinity New Years Eve non-party was a success!  As promised, we had our inaugural use of our new outdoor wood heated sauna.  Other festivities included pizza making party, midnight ginger cookie decorating contest, a night time game of kick the can (haven't you always wanted to play that game as an adult?) and stupid human tricks.

Guests Miche, Nova, Doug and Angela stayed for a quick visit in Cowichan Bay.  They inspired us to launch the voyageur and paddle out to watch the Sea Lions feed in the bay.  The Chum salmon are still running, but mostly are heading back out to sea in the final part of there cycle, as the photo below will indicate:

Things have been amazing here this week!  Guest Max U. and I went for a paddle in Cowichan Bay yesterday.  We were totally amazed by what we found!  The Sea Lions have arrived recently and we were treated to a fantastic display of 10 or more Sea Lions in a feeding frenzy in the bay.  The noise and activity was like I have never seen before.

The eagles have gathered; we counted 10 today from the window of our cottage while eating breakfast.  Pictures to follow soon...

Vanessa and I have just returned home from a short trip to visit family and friends in the east.  We called the trip business research and spent about half our nights at B&Bs.  Some were great, others mediocre and others yet were terrible.  Our favourite bed and breakfast was in Lachute, Quebec:  A la Claire Fontaine has fabulous hosts!  The place is also beautiful and quiet and the food was great, but as usual in this business, it is the host that makes it fantastic.

We also spent 3 nights at Piebird Bed and Breakfast in Nipissing, Ontario.  I can't compare it to the others we stayed in because I would be prejudiced, as my sister Sherry operates this one of a kind gem in the funky and rural community on the shores of the South River.

If you are looking for your first bed and breakfast experience:

or maybe just your first good bed and breakfast experience:  Vanessa and I have just returned from a short trip doing "business research" at various bed and breakfasts.  We know first hand as travelers how uncomfortable it can be in the wrong bed and breakfast.  We've also experienced service and hospitality beyond even our expectations when we stay at the right bed and breakfast.  And that is what we want to be to you: the perfect getaway on the road less traveled.  You can be assured that at Affinity Guesthouse, we will make sure your experience is as fun and exciting or quiet, relaxing and private as you would like it to be.  Our most recent trip to other bed and breakfasts has taught us a few more tricks to make sure you are totally satisfied when you stay with us.

Affinity Guesthouse Oct 31, 2007

Our night time walks around the property with Seth are getting more and more exciting!  The gulls and seals don't seem to sleep: at night along the river is a cacophony of calls vying for the tasty morsels left from the seals as they eat their evening meals of salmon.  Little can be seen except for the movement in the water, but it makes for a great wildlife moment!  We finally had our first group of eagles on the property today.  Their song is no meager compared to the sight of these marvelous birds.  There are still no huge groups of Trumpeter Swans on the property yet.  If the birds are any sign, I would say we still have a few weeks before the cold weather settles on us.  This year, the Ravens seem to like to roost in the leaf-less maple beside our cottage and they sure like to talk in the morning!

Our friends at Genoa Bay Cafe are still sending referrals our way.  Gumboot Guiding is offering several "Dip and Dine" voyageur canoe tour trips to Genoa Bay Cafe and also to Hilary's Cheese in Cowichan Bay.  Price is $50 per person and includes lunch, beverage, dessert,  paddling gear and instruction.  Here is a photo of one of the Summer Canoe Trips (weather like this is not guaranteed for the November paddles!)

We have great visitors this week!  Kim and Davina have recently moved to the Cowichan Valley and are waiting for their home to be finished.  They have decided to call the Affinity Guesthouse home until the contractor is finished at their new log home.  We are doing our best to make things as easy as possible for our new Cowichan settlers.  Kim has moved her entire farm to the Cowichan Valley: horses, dogs, cats...everything!

Affinity Guesthouse, Oct 22, 2007

Wildlife in Cowichan Bay update:  The Chum salmon have started to arrive, the Redtailed Hawks are much more active in the area, the seals have followed the salmon right up the river, as have the otters.  Our resident Barred Owl is back on the property (well, I like to think it is the same owl), the Barn Owls can be heard all night long, the Norther Flickers are back roosting in the barn, the leaves have changed, the mosquitoes have been gone for weeks.  The Canadian Geese have left for the winter, and the Trumpeter swans are expected to arrive soon.  The Autumn is a beautiful time of year here in the Cowichan Valley!

Affinity Guesthouse, Oct 18, 2007

Vanessa and I were up early today to put in our canoes for a sunrise paddle.  The clouds stopped any glorious sunrise, but it is always a pleasure to be on the water while the rest of the world sleeps.

Some lost  travelers found there way into our driveway lately, looking for our friends at the Genoa Bay Cafe.   All the way from Honolulu: John, Mary, Hoagy and his wife (I am sorry I don't remember your name!)  It was a cool and rainy day here in the Valley, so we took the opportunity to dress our travelers in the Authentic voyageur regalia that we use for our canoe tours.  What great sports!

Our first wedding was an absolute success!  Christer and Kristin joined hands in matrimony and smooched to seal the deal right here on our property.  90 guests attended the event and it was catered by our friends at Genoa Bay Cafe: the wedding was Thanksgiving themed and the cuisine was an abundant thanksgiving feast.  Thank you Kristin and Christer for choosing Affinity Guesthouse for the backdrop for your wedding!

Peter and Christine stopped by yesterday to check out the property.  They were on a mini tour of the Cowichan Valley as a 10th anniversary celebration.  We are thankful for their spontaneous stop-over at Affinity Guesthouse.  Christine and Peter had their first Bed and Breakfast experience here.

Thank you, Merci beaucoup!  Dwight and Vanessa, you have been wonderful in all possible 'host' ways!  Your food and presence was lovely.  Take care, and all the best to you.

Vanessa and I volunteered at the Duncan Chamber Gala Fundraiser last night.  Our friends from Genoa Bay Cafe , Equinox , Godfrey-Brownell Vineyards , Cherry Point Vineyards and many others were showcasing their skills as a kick-off to the Cowichan Wine and Culinary Festival.  We had a fantastic time supporting the Chamber and we were able to purchase some fantastic items at the silent auction: including a kayak package with our friends at the Warm Rapids Inn.  The Chamber of Commerce is focusing the funds raised from their only fund-raiser on the completion of a new visitor information center.

Sue and Joe Crocker stayed with us this week.  Sue and Joe were a fantastic couple and they spent more time than any other guests so far on our electric assisted bicycles.  Joe and Sue also hiked to Genoa Bay Cafe on evening that was too windy for paddling.  We had a great time eating dinner with them and also working off our dinners on the hiking trail around the base of Mt. Tzouhalem.

What a wonderful place to find at the end of our holiday in Canada.  Dwight and Vanessa are exceptional hosts, (the bed was just like we have at home).  The electric bikes are great fun and we urge anyone to try them.  Thank you both very much, Best wishes with this venture.

We just had some visitors from Cowichan community Land Trust stop by to see our property and inform us about the conservation projects in the area.  One of the recent projects is the launching of NatureCowichan.net a website for those of you that are naturalists, birders or interested in conservation projects in the Cowichan Valley.

Today, we rode our electric assisted bicycles through Cowichan Bay Village and up the hill to Cherry Point Vineyards for a treat at their new  Bistro.  We happy to report that our electric bikes can easily take people to Cherry Point Vineyards ( I recommend lunch with Cheese cake for dessert; Vanessa likes the cheesecake with a glass of Blackberry Port).  Our guests are welcome to use our electric bikes while staying at Affinity Guesthouse.

Vanessa and I took advantage of a day off and we paddled up the Koksilah River in our tandem canoe at low tide.  We enjoyed seeing how the scenery can change with the absence of a 10 foot tide, which is what we need to navigate our 26 foot long voyageur canoe up the river on full moon nights.  The Ravens, gulls and harbour seals (along with our neighbours) are gathering in anticipation for the return of the Chum salmon which will be arriving soon.

Affinity Guesthouse Sept 11, 2007

We have just arrived home from a Genoa Bay Dinner paddle with Gumboot Guiding .  The weather was absolutely perfect for the 7 of us to cross Cowichan Bay in the hot afternoon sunshine and return into the sunset with a following ocean breeze.  The conversation was enthusiastic and the puns from paddling guest Vern were unprecedented in the 26 foot long canoe.  Print will not do it justice, but my favourite spontaneous suggestion was about the fishing lodge that "went under" because all of the guests were "cut-throats".  Sadly, we all laughed madly...

Guests in the Bed and Breakfast tonight include Deb and Fox, visiting from Qualicum.  Deb and Fox are on a 10 day golfing tour and we are glad they choose Affinity for their last night of accommodation.  I am not sure who is looking after their variety of pets at their acreage, but it was a real delight to paddle with them tonight and learn all about their love for animals!  No kidding, these two have had an eclectic mix of pets..ranging from 150 lb canines to 600 pound swines and a variety of miniature horses and carriages!  What a fun couple!

Dwight and Vanessa:

Thank you so much for such an extraordinary stay at Affinity Guesthouse.  The room and view were excellent.  The canoe trip to dinner at Genoa Bay was a truly memorable adventure.  Your delicious breakfast and recipes were greatly appreciated because of the smaller very healthy portions and the fact that it was basically all from your area.  And the bicycle trip around the dyke and later to Providence Farm was a marvelous lesson in sustainability.

Sincerely, Deb and Fox McKinley

Also joining us tonight for the paddle were Brenda and Vern (pun Queen).   In addition to being an expert at speedy delivery of witty remarks, Vern may be able to help us knock the odour out of our German Sheppard, Seth.  Those of you that have stayed here and enjoyed Seth's attention, loyalty and guided walks also know that he could learn a lesson or two about personal hygiene.  I will keep you updated.

What a weekend!  The Duncan Ultimate (frisbee) League hosted the 2nd annual Huck UP! Tournament.  What fun!  4 teams played a round-robin tournament at the fields at the Cowichan Rugby Club.  Affinity Guesthouse hosted the after party in the loft of our barn and around our fire pit in our pastoral yard.  Pete, Sue and their lovely daughters Anika and Chloe stayed as our bed and breakfast guests while 40 more camped on our acreage.  Pete and Sue were visiting from my home town of Maple Ridge, BC: home of the infamous Maple Ridge Ultimate League.

Dear Dwight and Vanessa:

Thank you so much for a little bit of heaven in amongst the chaos of our hectic urban lives.  Everything was perfect: cosy beds for us to snuggle into, delicios food for us to savour, and wonderful vistas for us to enjoy.  Even Seth, our guide for our walk around the property, knows how to take care of his guests.  We'll be back!

Peter, Sue, Anika and Chloe, Maple Ridge, BC

I liked looking for snakes and the fire pit.  Love Anika (age 6)

The 100 mile breakfast on Sept 6 was incredible and inspiring...but mostly, it was delicious.

We enjoyed a quiet long weekend at the property.  Our guests this week were visiting from The Sunshine Coast.  Wendy and Bob were helping their daughter settle in at Shawnigan Lake School and we are so happy they decided to spend some time with us at The Affinity Guesthouse.  Wendy and Bob (along with Daryl, Ann, Nick and Jana) now hold the record for rainiest voyageur paddle!  We had a scheduled paddle to Genoa Bay planned for Wendy and Bob; it poured rain on us as we crossed the bay for Dinner at Genoa Bay Cafe.  The deluge ceased  just long enough for us to enjoy our fantastic meals (I am addicted to the Halibut!!); however, the downpour restarted for our crossing back to the Guesthouse and warm tea.

Thank you so much for a great adventure to Genoa Bay Cafe!  Wonderful breakfast and warm hospitality.  See you next time.

Wendy and Bob, Sunshine Coast, BC

It was interesting to arrive back at the property and find 6 people industriously converting our barn into a funky party space for the Duncan Ultimate (frisbee) League party that is scheduled for this Saturday Sept 8.

We are also eagerly anticipating the Chamber of Commerce sponsored 100 Mile breakfast tomorrow at Equinox Cafe !  I guess that should be the 160 km breakfast.

We were very fortunate to have Rob and Stephanie stop in this week.  Stephanie and Rob live aboard a converted Trawler in Semiahoo, USA all summer. They were in the area visiting friends in Maple Bay.  We are very grateful for the referral from their friend, Linda.  Linda's charity of choice in the area is the Cowichan Intercultural Society , and we will send a small donation as a thank you for recommending us to her traveling friends.

Stephanie and Rob inspired us to take an early morning paddle in the 26 foot long Voyageur Canoe.  The conditions were perfect for our 90 minute pre-breakfast (post-latte) paddle into Cowichan Bay.  I was very surprised to see how well the large boat paddled with only 4 of us.  What a great way to start the day!

Amazingly beautiful spot!  Dwight: you are a great innkeeper with an excellent eye for detail.  Thanks for the delicious breakfast, the peaceful canoe ride but above all, the interesting conversation and warm hospitality.  Sorry we didn't get to meet Vanessa, but we look forward to that on our next stay here.

Guests Tanya and Tom booked rooms and a voyageur moonlight paddle with Gumboot Guiding for Tom's 28th birthday (at least that is what he claims).  10 of us set out at dusk to watch the moon-rise before we paddled up the Koksilah River in the Dark.  The intrepid paddlers were rewarded with an effortless drift back to the the Guesthouse.  The evening was completed by a poor rendition of "Happy Birthday", birthday candles and a cake (okay, it was just a banana muffin with candles; but it was fresh baked).  Today, I took a quick trip to the Butter Church with Shawn and Chris; who were fascinated with our electric bicycles.

Affinity Guesthouse Aug 29,2007

I just had to put a few lines in here.  Last night, our guests for a voyageur canoe paddle cancelled their trip.  We embraced the evening off and we were able to attend the 28th AGM for The Providence Farm Society .  They really, really know how to put on an AGM.  Punctual, inspiring, well attended and very little business.  On the way home from the farm on our electric bikes, we were able to watch the sun set .  What a beautiful night!

Affinity Guesthouse Aug 27, 2007

It is definitely blackberry season here in the Cowichan Valley.  Our guests this weekend: a family reunion that utilized the entire property, guesthouse and kitchen, took advantage of the bumper crop of blackberries on our property and produced blackberry pies, crumbles and fresh blackberry syrup.  Fortunately for us, they shared there baked goods with generousity.  The family really put our electric bikes to the test!  We enjoyed visiting the Farmers market and tubing the Cowichan River once again!  Many songs were sang and marshmallows roasted over the 3 nights around the campfire in the back acreage.  Thank you so much John and Mary for using Affinity for your Family reunion.

Affinity Guesthouse Aug 23, 2007

The last Raspberries were harvested this week!  Fortunately for this week's guests I was able to find 60 lbs of Fraser Valley Blueberries and we  still have fruit on our strawberry plants.  You can be sure we will freeze as much fruit as necessary to provide guests with local, organic fruit filled baked goodies all winter long.

This week, we enjoyed utilizing our electric bikes and taking our guests Tracy, Brenda and Carol to Providence Farm for a walking tour.  My favourite part of the farm is the animals.  The llamas and horses are always a delight.  Providence farm is also where we purchase oureggs and in season veggies for breakfasts.   Once again, Gumboot Guiding wowed our guests with a guided dinner paddle to Genoa Bay Cafe in the 26 foot long Voyageur Canoe.  The paddle back into the sunset was fantastic as usual.

Dwight and Vanessa: We all had a wonderful trip!  Thanks so much for your warm welcome and the delicious food!  And the canoe ride was great-a definite high-lite of the trip!  Thank you both!  Tracy, Chino, CA

D&V: a wonderful setting for a get away.  you guys were very fun and enjoyed your company!  Thanks for the fun canoe ride.  Also, loved your big dog Seth!  Thanks! Brenda, Woodinville, WA

Vanessa and Dwight:  We really enjoyed our stay in your lovely B&B.  We were made to feel so at home- both of you took the time to make us feel so welcome!  The food was awesome, the room was the best and the canoe ride to dinner showed us another part of your beautiful island!  I hope I can make it back another time (how about a bike ride?) Thanks again, Carol, Chino Hills, CA

The geese that spend the summer in the Cowichan River Estuary are looking very restless these days.  There were nearly a hundred geese on our lawn this morning.  The leaves are starting to fall on the trees and we are becoming suspicious that the Autumn will be arriving early this year; although, it is still warm enough to swim in the river.

What fun!  Jason and Lynn spent a night with us this week; they were taking advantage of the opportunity to spend a child-free night together.  Interestingly, they did not need a babysitter for the evening, because there baby is not yet born: Lynn is 9 months pregnant and due in 7 days!  Lynn and Jason are both avid canoeists and requested a paddle to Genoa Bay Cafe for dinner.  Here is a photo of them in Cowichan Bay on our electric bicycles:

Vanessa and Dwight:  WOW!  Thank you so much for sharingthis gem of an experience with us.  Will highly recommend to all.  Scrumptious breaky and snacks and mmmm..what a blissful evening paddle for dinner.  All the little touches are so appreciated.  We wish you all the best in your endeavours and look forward to many post-pregnancy get-aways.  Truly a pregnant woman's paradise.  Thank you!

We started our BC day long weekend by checking in guests Dawn and Marvin, visiting from Ketchikan, Alaska.  One of their priorities was to escape the dampness and rain of the panhandle;  The Cowichan Valley did not disappoint; the weather has been beautiful.  Marv really enjoyed the blackberries on the property; apparently blackberries do not grow well in Alaska.  We were happy to send him off with a bag-full for their trip to Victoria.

Also joining us this weekend were Jill and Kelli visiting from Prince George and Darren (traveling from AB)  Jill fell in love with our German Sheppard, Seth; Kelli spent a record amount of time in the bathtub in our master suite soaking in our Silk Road bath salts.  Although the trio were busy visting family in the area, they found time to horseback ride in Cobble Hill and to use our electric bikes to cruise the area.  Kelli also found the time to visit Cherry Point Vineyards and purchase some of their wonderful Blackberry Port.

Dwight and Vanessa:

You guys rock.  Great food, great hospitality and dog and even better CHAI!  The beds were great; the everything made me happy!  Thanks for letting me maul your dog!  You guys rock; I'm going to miss you and Seth.  Jillian, Prince George, BC

PS Seth: you ROCK!

Gumboot Guiding used the property to launch and paddle 9 people to Genoa Bay Cafe in the 26 foot long Voyageur Canoe for dinner on Monday night.  Conditions were tougher than normal, but everyone persevered and were rewarded with fantastic seafood and pasta at the Cafe.  The return journey home at sunset was much more smooth and relaxing.

Affinity Guesthouse July 30, 2007

We've had a great weekend accommodating John and Carol from Castlegar, BC.  John is a white water paddler; however, he regrettably left his kayak at home, as he was in the area to celebrate Rob's wedding across the bay on Khenipsen Road.  John and Carol coined a fantastic phrase for our bed and breakfast: the called us the "UNVICTORIAN BED AND BREAKFAST".  We have been brainstorming for months about how to sum up our unique bed and breakfast experience in one line.  I think this just sum us up!  Thanks John and Carol!

Steve and partner Kristy also joined us this weekend for a get-away which included a moonlight paddle in our voyageur canoe with Gumboot Guiding.  Steve, Kristy and 6 friends joined us for a paddle on Cowichan Bay and up the Koksilah River.  We paddled the voyageur further up the River than ever before (Rugby players seem to make the boat go faster).  We were scared and delighted when we startled a harbour seal far up the freshwater of the Koksilah River.  The seal swam under our boat in shallow, crystal clear water and allowed all paddlers a view of seal rarely seen outside the Vancouver Aquarium.

Thank you so very much!  Our friends and us loved the voyager trip!  Your guesthouse is beautiful, walking the property is so relaxing and breakfast was delicious.  Wonderful hosts!  All the best as your venture develops.  Kristy and Steve

We had a delightful drop-in this weekend: Sven and Nicole of Switzerland spent two days with us.  They also joined us for a moonlight paddle with Gumboot Guiding.  Although no seals scared us that night, we were able to spot the busy beaver up the river slapping his tail at sunset.  Sven and Nicole also joined me for a dusk swim at one of my favourite swimming spots on the Cowichan River.

Thank you very, very much for the nice (a bit too short) time we spent here with you.  The place is just fantastic.  The "adventures" were awesome and the breakfasts very delicious!  If we had know before, we would have come earlier to spend more time with you.  We wish you all the best and hope to see or hear from you.  Nicole and Sven (Batman and Robin), Switzerland

What an exciting week!  All of our guests this week are competing in the BMX World Championships in Victoria.  Brian Onofrichuk, John Starcevic and siblings Ben and Cleome Hope are tuning their bikes getting ready for the races this weekend.  After they finished BMX practice today, Vanessa and I spent the afternoon tubing the Cowichan River with them.  The sun was high and warm.  What a great way to spend a warm afternoon.  The water level was great (and bumpy).

The Island Folk Festival was again successful this past weekend July 20,21,22.  Guests this weekend were visiting from Victoria: choir singers performing at the Folk Fest at Providence Farm.  Other guests at Affinity were Krista and Andrew Filmore, visiting us from Maple Ridge, BC.  Andrew and Krista are a fun couple that inspired us to host a games night at Affinity: including Setters of Catan, Dice and Catch Phrase.  The event was well attended and may have been extra fun due to the Merridale Cider that we love to treat our guests to!

Guest Jeremy Sean Williams has been staying here at the Guesthouse since Sunday.  Jeremy and his son Ayden are on a Vancouver Island photography holiday.  Jeremy is a fantastic outdoor and wilderness photographer that is best known for his work with the Western Canada Wilderness Committee.  Jeremy has been taking shots from our voyageur canoe and has been enjoying daily paddles on the Koksilah River and Cowichan Bay.

The weather has been fantastic here in the Cowichan Valley.  The Duncan Summer festival has been busy entertaining locals and visitors with free performances and activities all week in the town core.  Few things please cyclists more than an entire town core blocked off to cars!  The Duncan Farmer's Market was very well attended today; I stopped by today to pick up some local Honey for our guests this weekend.

We just arrived home from an evening paddle with our guests Bruce and Elaine, visiting from Kingston, ON.  We paddled to Cowichan Bay Village for dinner with Gumboot Guiding Canoe Adventures in a 25 ft long voyageur canoe.  Being on the water at Dusk really is a magical experience!

Charming home, beautiful vistas, delightful evening paddling and awesome breakfasts.  Thanks so much for a memorable end to our visit to Vancouver Island.  Elaine and Bruce, Kingston On.

Dear Dwight and Vanessa:

Although we travelled all day Sunday to get home and I'm now back in the office, the wonderful time we spent with you at the Affinity Guesthouse still looks rosy.  Thanks again for such a great time.  Bruce and Elaine

Gumboot Guiding Canoe Adventures used the waterfront property at Affinity Guesthouse to launch their 25 foot long Voyageur canoe Das Boot for a circumnavigation of Saltspring island.  Guide Vanessa Elton led 4 guests in her big canoe as well as the Pain's in two kayaks and the Kilgalin/Webb clan in a tandem canoe.  It was great to see the 10 paddlers arrive safe and sound, albeit tired, back to Affinity Guesthouse late Friday afternoon.  The results from the SCLTC Grass Court Classic are here

Gumboot Guiding once again used the waterfront property of Affinity Guesthouse to launch their voyageur canoe Das Boot for a moonlight paddle.  The paddle was well attended by local Duncan residents.  Launching around 8:30 PM and paddling until the moon is fully in the sky, participants enjoy the calm water, beaver sightings, hot tea and home baked cookies.
